How To Marble Ceramics With Marabu

Learn how to marble and create your own beautifully marbled home decor objects using unfinished ceramic pieces and Marabu Easy Marble paint! Looking for a fun and simple craft to help you make some beautiful home decor. I have just the thing.

Marbling is such a fun and simple craft project, and if you haven’t given it a try yet, you need to! I just had so much fun making these pretty little home decor pieces, and I can’t wait to do some more marbling.

Step One. Prepare

First, if you want the base of your piece to be a different color, you will need to paint the unfinished ceramic item and allow it to dry completely before painting. When I added a glossy clear topcoat to some of my pieces, I noticed the color of the ceramic darkened a bit, so if you want a nice white base and plan on using a topcoat, then I would recommend starting with a coat or two of white paint before marbling.

Next, it’s time to prepare your marbling set up. Start off by finding a large bowl or container that is large enough and deep enough for the pieces you will be marbling. This bowl will end up with some paint on it, so go with one that you don’t care about.

Fill the bowl with room temperature water. (If the water is too cold, the paint might clump and harden.) You will also want to have some toothpicks and pieces of scrap card stock on hand.

I would recommend doing a couple of trial pieces before you try marbling your ceramics to give you a good idea of how it works. I started with a paper box first, and was really happy with how it turned out.

Step Two. Add Paint and Swirl.

With your set up all ready to go, it’s time to get some paint in that bowl! First give each of the paint jars you are using a good shake. When you are adding paint to the water in your bowl, you need to move fairly quickly, so it is a good idea to have the colors you are using pre-shaken with their caps off and ready to go.

Start off by adding a few drops of one color to the bowl.

Then, add a few more drops of the next color.

I’m partial to a simple black and white marble myself, so there is nothing wrong with just using two colours; however, you can add as many as you like (but remember to move quickly!).

After you have your chosen colours dripped into the bowl, grab one of your toothpicks and gently swirl the colours together. Don’t overmix the paint. A few stirs should do it.

Step Three. Dip and Finish.

Next, take your ceramic object and gently insert it down into the water through the paint.

Then, before removing the object from the water, blow the remaining paint on the surface of the water way from your piece to keep more paint from adhering as you pull the piece out. Remove the piece from the water and set it aside to dry.

Grab one of your scrap pieces of card stock and use it to clean the excess paint out of the bowl before your next dip.

Once your marbled pieces have dried, you can protect them and add extra shine with a clear glossy topcoat.
